S-02.3Asphalt maintenance
Pothole repair, skin patching, and remove-and-replace
From quick skin patches to full-depth removal and replacement with base work, we repair damaged asphalt at the depth the problem actually requires.

Repair at the right depth
Not every damaged area fails the same way. Some damage is limited to the surface; some reaches the base. Matching the repair to the depth of the failure is what makes a patch last.
Skin patching
A thin layer of new asphalt placed over surface damage where the underlying pavement is still sound.
Removal and replacement with base compaction
The damaged asphalt is cut out, the existing base is re-compacted, and new asphalt is placed and compacted.
Removal and replacement with base replacement
Where the base itself has failed, the damaged asphalt and base material are removed and replaced before new asphalt goes down.

Questions
Pothole Repair & Patching questions
What is the difference between skin patching and remove-and-replace?
Skin patching places a thin layer of asphalt over surface damage on otherwise sound pavement. Remove-and-replace cuts out the damaged section and rebuilds it, with base compaction or base replacement depending on the condition of the base.
Why do some potholes keep coming back?
When the base underneath has failed, a surface patch alone cannot hold. Those areas usually need removal and replacement with base work.
