Asphalt overlays and fabric overlays

An overlay places a new layer of asphalt over existing pavement to restore a smooth, durable wearing surface — without the cost of full reconstruction when the structure below is still serviceable.

When an overlay is the right call

Overlays suit pavement that is worn, oxidized or cracked across the surface but still structurally serviceable. They restore ride quality and appearance and add a fresh wearing layer. The Federal Highway Administration counts thin asphalt overlays among preventive treatments for pavement in good condition.

Areas with failed base should be removed and replaced before an overlay, otherwise the same failures tend to show through the new surface.

What a fabric overlay adds

A fabric overlay places a paving fabric interlayer between the existing pavement and the new asphalt. Paving fabrics are commonly used to help slow the reflection of existing cracks into the new surface and to act as a moisture barrier. Whether fabric is worthwhile depends on the condition of the existing pavement.

Questions

Asphalt Overlays questions

Is an overlay cheaper than replacing the whole lot?

Usually an overlay costs less than full removal and replacement because the existing pavement stays in place as the foundation. It only makes sense if that existing pavement is still structurally serviceable.

Do you offer fabric overlays?

Yes. We offer both standard overlays and fabric overlays.
